Disability Community Forum's were held on July 14th and 15th in Crownpoint, NM at the Navajo Technical University and Shiprock, NM at the Phil Thomas Performing Arts Center.
The Communities came together to use their Voice and discuss changes and concerns that need to be done for the Disability Community's for both evenings. The stories the communities shared were directed to Navajo Nation Candidate's running for their respected offices and presidency. So many voices were heard and the turn-out was amazing. Points that were made from different community members are from their own experiences to Better Medical Facilities, documentation is difficult to obtain for elders as so much was not documented through medical when they were younger, better Mental Health services for Veterans, NHA Housing better accommodating for the Disabled, Navajo Nation websites to be more handicap accessible, better wages for healthcare workers, local Chapter Houses to have a list of Disabled Community Members from low risk to high risk for accommodations, closer retirement homes and for the Navajo Nation to adjust to technology that could help with electricity and water. The Presidential Candidate's that did attend had the chance to speak to the communities and reach through Radio Broadcasting as well.
Tables were put up to show the Native American Disability Law Center is here to service the communities. Food was provided by NADLC and gas cards were given out to community members who traveled great distances to be a part of the Forum's. NADLC Community & Government Liaison Hoskie Benally Jr., opened and closed the Disability Community Forums with inspiring words of why the Voice of the Communities are very powerful and to keep discussing these important topics even after the election.
